Plastic SurgeryPlus size mommy makeover: the BMI surgeons accept, how risk rises with BMI, staged plans, surgery after weight loss and realistic results.

Mommy makeover scars: where the tummy tuck, belly button, breast and liposuction scars sit, how they fade from week 1 to 2 years, and scar care.
Mommy makeover scars are permanent, but surgeons place them low on the body or in natural creases so underwear and swimwear can hide them: a hip-to-hip line from the tummy tuck, a small ring around the belly button, scars around the areola (usually with a vertical line) from a breast lift, and tiny dots from liposuction. They look red and raised for the first months, then fade over 12 to 18 months and are fully mature by about 2 years.

Mommy makeover scars — the short answer

Every part of a mommy makeover leaves its own scar, so the total depends on which procedures you have. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons describes where each one usually sits.
The longest mommy makeover scar comes from the tummy tuck. The ASPS explains that the incision "is generally placed from one hip to the other," so the surgeon can reach the abdominal muscles and remove the excess skin. It is placed low so it sits inside underwear or a bikini. A mini mommy makeover uses a shorter scar.
According to the ASPS, "a breast lift incision will need to encircle the areola (the darker skin around the nipple) and extend downward to or into the breast crease" in most cases. A breast augmentation alone usually needs only a short incision in the crease under the breast. Read more on the breast lift page.
Liposuction leaves tiny entry marks, usually under 1 cm, placed in natural folds. When fat is removed from the abdomen during a tummy tuck, the ASPS says the tummy tuck incision usually can be used, "meaning there will be no additional scarring."
In a full tummy tuck, your belly button is not removed or replaced. It stays attached to the abdominal wall, the skin is pulled down, and your own navel is brought out through a new opening — leaving a small circular scar around it. How the new mommy makeover belly button looks is something to discuss with your surgeon before surgery. The NHS notes that a full abdominoplasty leaves "a scar around your belly button" as well as the lower scar.

Mommy makeover scars change a lot in the first two years. They often look thicker and redder around weeks 3 to 8 before they start to flatten and fade.
| Mommy makeover scar stage | What the scar looks like |
|---|---|
| Weeks 1–2 | Red, swollen incisions, covered with tape or glue |
| Weeks 3–8 | Temporarily thicker, redder and more raised as collagen builds |
| Months 3–12 | Texture flattens; colour fades to pink or close to skin tone |
| Months 12–24 | Mature scar: a thin, pale, flat line |
Stages follow Google's answer for "mommy makeover scars" (checked 4 October 2026). The NHS gives a similar picture for tummy tuck scars: raised scars "that may look red or different from your usual skin colour – they should fade over 12 to 18 months."
By about two years, healed mommy makeover scars are considered mature: thin, flat lines that are pale, silver or close to your skin tone. How they look depends on your skin type, genetics, sun exposure and how well they were cared for early on. The ASPS is honest about the limit: "the scar lines will improve, although they'll never disappear completely." Compare with realistic mommy makeover before and after timelines.

You cannot avoid mommy makeover scarring, but you can help scars heal as flat and pale as your skin allows. Always follow your surgeon's timing.
The NHS lists "thick, obvious scars developing" and "wounds failing to heal" among the risks of a tummy tuck. Ask your surgeon to see a mommy makeover scar that opens, oozes, becomes increasingly red, hot or painful, or keeps thickening instead of settling. Raised scars can often be treated, and some patients have a scar revision later. Infection and wound problems are covered in mommy makeover risks and complications.
Whether mommy makeover scars are worth it depends on how you feel about trading permanent, low-placed scars for a flatter abdomen and lifted breasts. Many patients find the scar a fair price for removing loose skin and repairing separated muscles that diet and exercise cannot fix; others decide a smaller plan with shorter scars suits them better. Look at healed scars, not fresh ones, before deciding.
Scar placement is planned before surgery, not after. Livist Medical arranges mommy makeover treatment in Turkey at contracted healthcare institutions holding a Health Tourism Authorization Certificate, where you can discuss incision placement with your surgeon in advance.
